Get your Body Ready – The Whole Thing

Strength and conditioning are of the utmost importance. The last thing you want is your body failing you when your 5000 meters up a mountain. You will need to work out all of your muscle groups, and spend a fair amount of time devoted to cardio.

 

Focusing some extra effort on your legs is definitely a good idea, but the gigantic pack of gear that’s coming along for the ride will be engaging your core. While leg strength is paramount, it should not come at the cost of any other exercise.

 

Endurance is essential as well, so cardio is crucial. Climbing a mountain is not a sprint; it is a marathon. Your body must be prepared to deal with strain for an extended period of time.

 

 

Time Outdoors – Altitude is the Enemy

You can get acclimated for your climb by maximizing time spent in nature. Go hiking as much as possible and get your body accustomed to long durations at high altitude, if possible. The air gets thinner the higher up you get, but if your lungs are ready, so are you.

 

 

Learn the Gear – Technology is your Friend

Experienced climbers know to rely on their gear when necessary. Understanding what tools are available and knowing how to use them is a huge part of staying safe while on a climb. Practice using all of your gadgets beforehand so you won’t have to learn on the fly.

 

 

Mountain climbing is the perfect mix of risky and fun, and that is the thrill of it. If you can find the balance to prepare both your body and mind, the potential rewards are huge. You’ll achieve a feeling of personal accomplishment, along with a great story to tell at neighborhood barbecues.
